ARMIDALE CRITERIUM - INFO

There will be a change in format for this years A grade. We will be running a teams event. We are after 5 of your A graders to compete as a team, with the hope of getting all the local regional clubs involved - perhaps 5 or 6 teams of 5. The prize money has been significantly increased for all grades and of course the lower grades are the usual criterium format, with all welcome. Please see the flyer on the website. or contact me on 043834667 or Mark Bullen at his bike shop if you need clarification. We hope to see you all there and 5 of your best for A grade!

Dear Regional Cycling Clubs,

NIAS once again will have a Cycling program for 2010 and Applications are currently open.

You will find below the 2010 program information that is on the NIAS website. We have made some changes this year’s program.

The main changes are:

-          Ages (just focusing on U15 and U17 riders)

-          No tier structure and only a maximum of 10 athletes in the squad.

-          Instead of training sessions there will be 2 NIAS nominated events (which will be local club events) that the athletes must attend to receive reimbursement and another 2 events that they must nominate if selected to attend throughout program duration.

-          NIAS will also look to get a guest coach to come up and hold a session with the athletes.

Mark Bullen will still remain as program coordinator/ mentor to any coaches and athletes that need support- he is only a phone call away.

NIAS trials will be held in Armidale on the 21st Of March.

There will be a $40 charge per person (kids and parents) for catering
 which
we will collect on the day. Accommodation on-site is bushland camping with
tents or caravans, however more luxurious accommodation is available in
 Swansea and Belmont.

COFFS CRITERIUM

New 'Racing Kangaroo' acquisition, Tom Apthorpe, dominated a weekend of track and criterium racing to take over the lead in the McDonald's Northern Region Crit Series B-Grade recently. He is quickly justifying his inclusion in the emerging squad of development riders and making competitors look up and take notice of his talents on the road as well as the track.

Apthorpe rode a very intelligent B-Grade criterium race on Sunday, combining brilliantly with club-mates Codie Miller (on his Dad's replacement Giant) and Creighton Dolbel to out-kick his competition in the dash to the line. Miller executed many moves throughout, supporting both of his team-mates. However it was Dolbel who took the race into his own hands by leading from the front for the last lap, catapulting Apthorpe's dominant sprinting skills first across the line.

The A-grade race saw a 3-man break "lap" the main group and, consequently, put a strangle-hold on the outcome. Despite Ben Fox, Ethan Kimmince and Jake Campbell racing well in recent times, the trio were unlucky to miss the right moves on the day and this cost them any high result. Campbell did what he could, however, claiming 4th overall, and considering most of the field were racing for lower positions, this was a good result for the effort.

Earlier in the C-grade race, ICNT riders were on the podium also. 'Racing Kangaroo' - Blake Schuman, along with Paddy Miller, Peter Sunderland and Peter Baz were representing the club proudly in this race and in addition to Schuman showing much strength on the uphill sections of this technical course, Miller (senior) was driving the peleton relentlessly and continuously. However, it was Sunderland who just failed by the narrowest of margins to take the win in another sprint finish, with Baz claiming 3rd after clumsily crashing on only the second lap.

Against the boys, Bonnie Miller rode her heart out earlier in the Junior race and was right in the action until the end just missing out on a place. She would have been supported by the Sunderland brothers, however their bikes unfortunately didn't quite make it to the start line in one piece.

TRACK RACING - Some ICNT members took advantage of a track carnival being conducted by the Coffs club on the Saturday afternoon with similarly classy results.

After dominating and winning easily a B-grade Scratch race, Tom Apthorpe asked to be elevated to the A-grade ranks which also spawned him further success. He finished the night with a win in each grade as well as a 3rd in the A-grade Elimination race. This was all done after he suffered a fall midway through the carnival.

Ben Fox also asserted his authority by winning the first race of the afternoon - an A-grade Scratch race. Paul Wilks also met success on the track, riding his stylish 'Stylus' from yesteryear claiming a 2nd in A-grade as well as anchoring a strong Italian Pursuit team to victory. And finally, Blake Schuman began his weekend strongly by dominating a B-Grade Elimination race and taking victory also.
